Low Platelet Related to Pregnancy: Things to Know


Platelets are types of blood cells that are primarily responsible for making sure that blood is not lost through bleeding. They do such by helping create a clot or plug to stop the bleeding. That is the reason why people who have low platelet levels or thrombocytopenia are recommended to have transfusion to replace the lost blood. However, what is more dangerous is when there are low platelets in pregnancy.


According to some professionals, a slightly low platelet count during the third trimester is just normal and will just go away after birth. That is due to the fact that the blood is diluted during this time and the plasma (blood fluid) is higher than the formed elements, which include platelets. Nonetheless, some doctors still consider even mild thrombocytopenia as a serious case. Such is owed to the fact that it may cause bleeding.


There are actually different types of low platelet count in pregnancy and the doctor should identify which one is affecting the patient since each type is managed differently. One type, which is often not alarming, is called gestational thrombocytopenia. This is the one that goes away after childbirth. Second, is the Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura or Autoimmune Thrombocytopenic Purpura which is usually present during the first and second trimesters of pregnancy.


The number of platelet lowers in this case because the mother has an antibody against the platelet. Meaning, her own body’s immune system is attacking and destroying the mother’s platelets. The danger of this is that the baby’s platelets can also be attacked and affected. Hence, many doctors recommend emergency cesarian delivery or induced labor. The third type is the Preeclampsia or Eclamptic Thrombocytopenia and HELLP Syndrome. This type is dangerous because it has caused a lot of perinatal deaths, retarded fetal growth, and thrombocytopenia in a baby.


In order to prevent blood loss during pregnancy, doctors prescribe supplements for pregnancy. They are the common vitamins like vitamin B complex and iron. Most individuals are already aware that those are prescribed to keep the baby healthy. Actually, they also make sure that the mother has sufficient levels to help maintain normal and healthy blood circulation and production. Thus, there is also a higher chance that platelets can be increased.


Nonetheless, mothers can also consume fruits and vegetables that have shown to help the body increase the level of the platelet. Some of which include papaya, citrus, tomatoes, mangoes, carrots, and green leafy vegetables. Increasing the intake of milk will also be helpful. Although such are natural and may not see to cause any complications, it is still best that pregnant women consult their physicians before they increase the intake of any of the mentioned products.
